Benefits of acupressure

穴位按摩好處

Acupressure is a treatment method derived from traditional Chinese medicine that combines the principles of massage and acupuncture. It stimulates specific points on the body to regulate blood circulation, relieve muscle tension, relieve pain, and promote overall health. It is based on the understanding of the human body's meridian system, where meridians are seen as channels through which qi and blood flow, and acupoints are key nodes on these channels. This method has a long history and is both a reflection of traditional wisdom and is also widely used in modern times.

How acupoint massage works

In acupressure, therapists usually use fingers, thumbs, palms, or even professional tools to press, knead, push, or tap the acupoints with appropriate strength and rhythm. Common acupuncture points include:

Main benefits of acupressure

According to traditional Chinese medicine theory and some modern research, acupressure may bring the following benefits (the effects vary from person to person and are mostly supplementary, not a medical substitute):

  • Promote blood and lymphatic circulationIt helps improve local blood flow, reduce edema, and eliminate fatigue.
  • Relieve pain and discomfortFor conditions such as headaches, back pain, and joint pain, this product can alleviate chronic pain (such as lower back pain), possibly by releasing endorphins (natural pain relievers).
  • Improving sleep quality and reducing stressMassaging specific acupoints can relax nerves, lower stress hormones (such as cortisol), and help relieve anxiety and insomnia. Some studies indicate a positive effect on sleep in cancer patients or the elderly.
  • Regulate the digestive systemIt can relieve bloating, constipation, nausea, and indigestion. For example, pressing the Zusanli or Neiguan acupoints is often used to improve gastrointestinal discomfort.
  • Boost immunity and overall vitalityStimulating acupoints may regulate immune function, replenish qi and nourish health, help prevent minor ailments, and enhance physical fitness. It also has an auxiliary effect on fatigue and sub-health conditions.
  • Other potential benefitsSome evidence suggests that it can relieve morning sickness, nausea caused by chemotherapy, stress-related symptoms, or help regulate gynecological problems (such as irregular menstruation), but it should be used with caution.

Modern scientific research (such as systematic reviews and clinical trials) supports the non-invasive effects of acupressure on pain management, sleep improvement, and anxiety relief, but the strength of the evidence varies and more large-scale studies are needed to confirm it.

Precautions

While acupressure offers numerous benefits, it is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant women, individuals with severe heart disease, or other chronic illnesses should undergo acupressure under the guidance of a physician. Furthermore, choosing a professional therapist and a suitable environment is crucial. The therapist should possess knowledge of anatomy and meridian theory to ensure accurate stimulation of acupoints and adjust the pressure and duration according to individual constitution to avoid discomfort. Although acupressure is safe and convenient, it is not suitable for everyone; please note:

If you experience any discomfort after the massage (such as dizziness or increased pain), stop immediately and consult a doctor.

Pregnant women should avoidAcupoints such as Hegu (LI4) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) may stimulate uterine contractions, and it is best to do so under professional guidance during pregnancy.

skin problemsDo not press on areas with open wounds, skin diseases, or tumors.

Serious illnessPeople with acute inflammation, heart disease, severe hypertension, hemorrhagic diseases, or fractures should not massage themselves.

otherAvoid massage on an empty stomach, after a full meal, after drinking alcohol, or when extremely tired; those with severe varicose veins or diabetes should be careful when massaging their feet (due to dulled senses, it is easy to apply too much pressure).
