The Secret Technique of Sexual Intercourse of the Ancient Emperors in Selecting Concubines 1: Butterfly Lucky Method

Butterfly Happiness Method"Imperial concubine selection" is a legendary, romantic method associated with choosing imperial concubines, traditionally attributed to Emperor Xuanzong of Tang (Li Longji). It is a highly poetic and romantic approach to selecting concubines. Although not recorded in official historical records, it is occasionally mentioned in folk tales and literary works. According to […]Kaiyuan and Tianbao AnecdotesAccording to historical records, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang had many beautiful concubines in his harem and found it difficult to choose who would serve him in bed. So he ordered the palace maids to wear fresh flowers in their hair in the courtyard and release colorful butterflies. Whichever palace maid a butterfly landed on would get the opportunity to serve him in bed that night.

This method, imbued with a strong sense of poetry and randomness, symbolizes the emperor's favor as free and elusive as a butterfly. Although the "Butterfly Favor Method" lacks concrete historical evidence, its concept may have been influenced by the romantic imagination of Tang or Song dynasty literati, reflecting the philosophical reflections on nature and fate at that time. This method was not common in the imperial harem, appearing more often in literature or legends, adding a romantic touch to harem life.

This method may seem random, but it actually contains a deeper meaning:

  • Nature's willAncient people believed that butterflies symbolized good marriages, and their selection represented the will of Heaven.
  • Psychological hintsThe palace maids would dress up carefully to attract butterflies, indirectly enhancing the aesthetic taste of the court.
  • Avoid competing for favorIn the name of "divine mandate," jealousy and infighting among the concubines were reduced.

However, this method also has drawbacks. For example, butterflies may be influenced by smell or color, so it may not be fair, and it has rarely been used in later generations.
