London, EnglandVagina MuseumVagina MuseumIt is the world's first physical museum dedicated to the vagina, labia, and gynecological anatomy. It opened its first permanent location in London's renowned Camden Market in 2019, aiming to break down societal taboos and shame surrounding the female reproductive system, promote bodily autonomy, and advance gender equality.

This museum focuses on the female vagina and vulva, aiming to help the public understand women's private parts correctly and dispel long-standing myths and misconceptions through exhibitions and educational activities.

Inspiration: The Penis Museum from Iceland

The museum's founder, Florence Schechter, visited Iceland in 2017.Penis MuseumAfter visiting the Icelandic Phallological Museum, she was surprised to find that there wasn't a single museum in the world dedicated to women's genitals. This discovery inspired her to create the world's first vagina museum through crowdfunding.

The Power of the Crowd: The Story Behind Successful Fundraising

Florence Chester then launched a crowdfunding campaign, which quickly gained public support.

"This is the world's first physical museum dedicated to vaginal, vulvar, and gynecological anatomy," said Zoe Williams, Head of Development and Marketing at the museum. "We were initially unsure how many people would support the project, but we were thrilled to have successfully raised £50,000 (approximately NT$1.956 million)!"

Museums are not only educational platforms, but also part of social movements. Through exhibitions, lectures and workshops, they explore issues such as women's health, menstruation, menopause and other related topics, while challenging cultural myths and gender stereotypes.

Reasons for establishment

The museum was founded for several reasons: First, societal discussions about women's bodies are often taboo, leading to a lack of knowledge among many women regarding health issues such as vaginal infections or endometriosis. Second, insufficient sex education leads to misunderstandings about the reproductive system among young people; the museum aims to provide accurate information through a combination of science and art. Third, it promotes gender equality, emphasizing that "no one should be ashamed of their body" and supporting the LGBTQ+ community in exploring transgender issues. According to its official website, its vision is to create a world where "everyone enjoys bodily autonomy and social freedom and equality." It is not only an educational institution but also a cultural movement against body shaming. From its 2017 pop-up event to its opening at Camden Market in 2019, the museum has attracted tens of thousands of visitors, becoming a unique cultural landmark in London.

Although the museum left Camden Market and moved to Bethnal Green in 2021, its time in Camden was its most iconic, situated in the bustling market and blending with street art and multiculturalism, symbolizing a rebellious spirit that broke with tradition.

Debunking Myths: Promoting Scientific Knowledge about Women's Intimate Areas

The Vagina Museum's inaugural exhibition, "Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How to Fight Them," will open on November 16 at a temporary venue in Kenton Market. The exhibition focuses on debunking common myths, such as the misconception that "women's private parts need special cleaning products." Williams emphasizes, "The vagina has self-regulating functions and does not require excessive cleaning."

Williams pointed out that, according to a survey by the non-profit cancer research organization "The Eve Appeal," 651 women and teenagers in the UK are afraid to use words like "vagina" or "vulva." "We want everyone to be able to talk confidently about this normal body structure," she said. "The vagina and vulva are part of a woman's body and deserve to be recognized and appreciated!"

What to see (exhibits and other things to see)

The Vagina Museum's exhibitions during Camden Market (2019-2021) were highly creative and educational, combining art, science, and interactive elements to allow visitors to learn in a relaxed atmosphere. The inaugural exhibition, "Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How To Fight Them," was the opening highlight, exploring common misconceptions such as "the vagina is dirty" or "menstruation is a curse." Exhibits included interactive models, historical artifacts, and artworks, such as replicas of ancient vaginal symbols, labial sculptures by contemporary artists, and medical illustrations demonstrating vaginal anatomy.

Other exhibitions include:

  • Periods: A Brief History(A Brief History of Menstruation): Tracing the history of menstruation from ancient Egypt to the modern era, this exhibit showcases the prototype of the Roman sanitary napkin, the Victorian menstrual belt, and the contemporary eco-friendly menstrual cup. Visitors can interact with hygiene products from different periods and learn how culture has influenced women's lives.
  • From A to VThe alphabetical exhibition, from A (Anatomy) to V (Vulva), covers gynecological knowledge, such as the neural structure of the clitoris (which has more than 8,000 nerve endings, more than the penis).
  • Trans EphemeraThe exhibition explores transgender issues, showcases transgender artworks and historical documents, and emphasizes that the vagina is not limited to cisgender women.
  • Menopause: What's Changed?(Menopause: What Changes?): Although this exhibition is later, there were related workshops during the Camden period that discussed menopausal symptoms and social prejudice.

The museum also has a gift shop selling vagina-themed items, such as labia-shaped earrings, menstrual cups, and educational books. Visitors can attend lectures, such as "The Vaginal Microbiome" or "The Science of Sexual Pleasure." These exhibits not only educate but also encourage dialogue, with many visitors sharing their personal stories, making it a healing space.

Extended Description: Imagine entering the museum and being greeted by a giant, colorful art wall depicting the labia, symbolizing diversity. Next is an interactive area where visitors can learn about vaginal elasticity (expandable up to 10 centimeters) by touching models. The history section showcases medieval superstitions about the "vagina demon," contrasting them with modern science to highlight progress. The art section features a photography exhibition capturing different cultural perspectives on the vagina, from Hindu temples to Western popular culture. The children's area (suitable for families) uses cartoons to explain basic knowledge, avoiding embarrassment. Overall, the museum is not a traditional static display but a lively experience; visitors typically stay for 1-2 hours and leave with new insights into their bodies.

Museum Location

During its time at Camden Market, the museum was located within Stables Market in the Camden borough of North London, at Unit 17 & 18, Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8AH. Camden Market is a famous London street market, brimming with punk culture, street food, and independent shops. The museum chose this location because of its diverse and open atmosphere, which attracted young people and tourists. The location is conveniently located, close to Camden Town Underground Station (Northern Line), a 5-minute walk away. The Thames Canal is nearby, allowing visitors to explore street art or enjoy diverse cuisine, such as Vietnamese pho or British fish and chips.

The museum has now moved to Bethnal Green (Arches 275-276 Poyser Street, London E2 9RF), but its origins lie in the Camden period, symbolizing a rebellious spirit. The reason: Camden's subcultural history (such as the punk movement) aligns with the museum's anti-taboo theme, helping to attract first-time visitors.

Help the community

The museum was established not only to fill a gap in museum knowledge but also to address societal issues. Data shows that approximately 301% of women in the UK lack knowledge about vaginal health (according to an NHS survey), leading to delayed diagnosis. The museum aims to change this through its exhibitions, and visitor feedback indicates that 801% of women reported "learning something new" (from a 2020 internal questionnaire).

Charts showcasing the data: The following table presents visitor statistics and social impact (based on publicly available reports and estimates):

Community concerns: Controversy over alcohol sales plan

Despite widespread support for the museum, local residents have raised concerns about its event plans. The museum successfully obtained a liquor license on October 24, but this sparked backlash from some residents. Patricia Thomas, a representative of the local residents' committee, stated that residents are worried the museum might host singles parties, leading to "indecent behavior" or disrupting the peace of the community.

Founder's response: Listen to public opinion and adjust plans

In response to residents' concerns, founder Chester stated, "We listened carefully and responded to the public's opinions." To minimize the impact, the museum significantly reduced its alcohol sales hours from the originally planned 10:00 AM to late at night to 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Monday through Sunday, and limited the number of people allowed inside to no more than 100 at a time. In addition, the museum obtained a film screening license to enrich its activities.

The cultural significance of museums

The museum's time in Camden symbolized London's diversity. Camden Market itself was a counterculture hub, encompassing everything from 1970s punk to modern street art, and the museum was integrated into it, attracting global visitors. The reason: Choosing Camden was strategic; the market receives 250,000 visitors daily, boosting the museum's exposure.

Social reasons: Sex education in the UK is fraught with controversy. The government revised the curriculum in 2020, but many schools avoid discussing the vagina. Museums are filling the gap, with exhibitions such as "Periods" exploring period poverty (affecting 10% women in the UK) and showcasing data that 500 million women worldwide lack access to hygiene products.

Historical reasons: Women's bodies have long been medicalized, from 19th-century hysterectomies to modern cosmetic surgery. The museum displays these examples to emphasize autonomy.

Future Outlook: Plans for fundraising advertising in 2025, expanding data collection such as visitor surveys and tracking knowledge change.
