Russia says it will use nuclear weapons to destroy Starlink satellites.
SpaceX Recent cooperationUkraineMinister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov In response to the requirements, a "whitelist" mechanism was activated: only Starlink terminals officially registered with the Ukrainian government could continue to be used, while those stolen or smuggled by the Russian military were directly blocked.

Ukrainian officials described the situation as a "catastrophe" for the Russian forces, with frontline communications collapsing, drone control malfunctioning, and tanks, artillery, and assault teams "completely blind." More than 70% drones and units lost connectivity, bringing some offensive operations to a standstill.

Russian field channels (such as Two Majors) and soldiers reacted with extreme dismay, with some directly calling Musk a "fascist bastard" or a "Ukrainian army bitch." The Russian military has long relied on Starlink for guiding drones and communications, and currently has no alternative (their "Starlinkski" system has never been implemented).

Russian propagandists' calls for a nuclear strike
- Russia's top propagandist Vladimir Solovyov(Putin's loyal critic) openly boasted on the show: Why Elon Musk Are satellites not legitimate targets? "Detonating a nuclear bomb in space would completely solve this problem!"
- He admitted that this would also destroy all of Russia's own satellites, but said sourly, "We're already lagging behind, it's no big deal, let's just use carrier pigeons instead."
- This isn't the first time (he made similar outrageous remarks in 2022), but this time, because Starlink has been officially cut off from supplies, Russian media has been particularly vocal about it. Some reports even mentioned that he threatened to attack SpaceX's US factory or directly shoot down satellites.
This kind of nuclear threat is, of course, typical Russian propaganda and intimidation; actually carrying it out would be tantamount to self-harm (a high-altitude nuclear explosion would produce...). EMP The effect (destroying most of the world's satellites, including Russia's) reflects the real anxiety within Kremlin about the collapse of frontline communications.

Other related developments
- Following the supply cut, Russia launched a new military reconnaissance satellite from the Plesetsk military space launch site using a Soyuz-2.1b rocket in an attempt to bolster its intelligence and communications capabilities.
- Economic outlook: Russian oil and gas revenues have plummeted (by 241 TP3T in 2025, and further halved by 501 TP3T in January 2026), inflation is out of control, taxes are insufficient, and shadow tankers have been seized by the West. Moscow business leaders and oligarchs have warned Putin that a real crisis could erupt within 3-4 months (before summer), with the banking system under immense pressure, a wave of restaurant closures, and soaring food prices.
- From the US perspective: Treasury official Scott Bessent said that Trump-era sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil have forced Putin to negotiate; if talks break down, more sanctions will follow. Ukraine is also preparing missiles capable of reaching Moscow and St. Petersburg.
- Overall, Putin is facing multiple pressures: disrupted battlefield communications, economic downturn, and continued Western arms supplies and sanctions. Some analysts believe this may push him toward ceasefire negotiations.
Russian media's nuclear threats sound crazy, but that's their usual style—they resort to nuclear threats when they're desperate. Musk's move has been praised by Ukraine as that of a "freedom fighter," but it has also made Russia grit its teeth in anger.
