Ancient Emperor's Secret Technique of Selecting Concubines 5: Random Car

Any caryesEmperor Yang of SuiThe Sui Dynasty (569-618 AD) was a highly controversial tool for selecting imperial concubines. It was a special type of carriage used for palace entertainment and the selection of concubines. According to the Book of Sui, this carriage could change direction at will and carried concubines for the emperor's pleasure at any time, symbolizing the debauchery of Emperor Yang of Sui.

Emperor Yang of Sui, obsessed with young girls, commissioned the creation of a small vehicle called the "Random Carriage," specifically for his use in favoring young women. This vehicle was not only exquisitely designed but also concealed mechanisms. For example, it was adorned with bronze ornaments that made noises as the vehicle shook, masking sounds from inside. The interior also featured devices to bind the women's hands and feet, immobilizing them and facilitating the emperor's actions. This design was highly aggressive and controversial, reflecting Emperor Yang's debauchery and extreme control over the women in his harem. Unlike the more casual "Sheep Carriage for Favor," the "Random Carriage" was more like a meticulously designed tool, demonstrating Emperor Yang's extreme pursuit of sensual pleasure and becoming one of the examples used by later generations to criticize his tyrannical rule.

Its features include:

  • Mechanical ingenuityThe vehicle is equipped with a mechanism that can adjust the direction of travel and even conceal bedding.
  • Power DisplayThe emperor could choose his concubines at will, without having to follow traditional etiquette.
  • negative reviewsLater historians have criticized this carriage as one of the symbols of the fall of the Sui Dynasty, reflecting the emperor's arrogance and debauchery.
